Marine Parts Advisor: Crusader 97772 4-Inch Exhaust Riser
Our goal is to educate you about the purpose and function as many of the Crusader marine engine parts we stock to keep your boat cruising smoothly. Whether you're a veteran seaman or a novice, one thing you all know is that a boat comes equipped with hundreds of moving parts.
No one person can know everything there is to know about the proper functioning of every boat part. That's why we've tapped the collective wisdom of our long-time technical experts to share their knowledge and expertise.
What You Need to Know About the Crusader 4-Inch Exhaust Riser
The Crusader exhaust riser is used to get the exhaust higher in the hull of the boat to allow the downhill run of the exhaust cooling water.
The water that cools the engine is injected into the exhaust system. You need that exhaust height high enough to run downhill and out of the boat. With some bigger boats, the engines are pretty low in the hull and could be at or below the water line.
By putting a riser between the manifold and the exhaust elbow, it gives you enough height to allow that downhill run from the exhaust elbow to the discharge on the outside of the boat.
If you don’t have the exhaust riser installed when required, the exhaust height would be too low and could potentially cause water to run back into the engine because there’s not enough drop in the exhaust system.
Life expectancy in salt water can become an issue. You want to flush the cooling system with fresh water after use to extend the life. If it’s scaled up you can take them off and clean them. At that point, however, we recommend replacement rather than cleaning because life expectancy is limited. Also, always use new gaskets whenever you remove and clean or repair the exhaust risers.
