The exhaust manifold is a critical component of your boat’s engine, directing exhaust gases away from the engine and expelling them safely through the exhaust system. Over time, wear and tear can cause the manifold to crack, corrode, or develop leaks, leading to decreased engine performance and potential long-term damage. In this article, we’ll explore the common causes of exhaust manifold damage and guide you through the proper steps for replacing them to ensure your engine operates smoothly and efficiently.
What Causes Exhaust Manifold Damage?
1. Corrosion from Saltwater Exposure
- One of the most common causes of exhaust manifold failure in marine engines is corrosion, particularly when the boat is used in saltwater environments. Saltwater is highly corrosive and can cause the manifold’s metal to degrade over time, especially if the cooling system is not functioning correctly or if proper maintenance is neglected.
- Corrosion typically starts inside the manifold where the water and exhaust

As a boat owner, one of the most common maintenance tasks you'll encounter is replacing worn-out or cracked bellows and hoses. These rubber components are crucial for connecting rigid piping and allowing movement, as well as for various fluid transfer applications on your boat. Over time, exposure to heat, sunlight, and the harsh marine environment can cause these parts to deteriorate, leading to potential leaks or failures.
Step 1: Identify and Locate
First, thoroughly inspect your boat's systems to identify the bellows or hoses that need replacement. Focus on areas like the exhaust system, engine cooling system, fuel lines, and plumbing connections. Look for signs of cracking, dry rot, or excessive wear. If you're unsure about which components need replacing, consult your boat's maintenance manual or seek advice from a professional marine technician.
Step 2: Gather Tools and Materials
Before starting the repair, ensure you have all necessary tools and materials. Basic hand tools such

What You Need to Know About the Crusader 6.0L Exhaust Elbow
This exhaust elbow is unique to the 6.0L Crusader and PCM engine. The 6.0L engine is relatively new to the Pleasurecraft Engine Group (PEG) lineup. It’s a GM engine which PEG introduced in 2004. It represented a completely new product and allowed them to start from scratch designing an all-new marine engine package.
One of the new design changes was this exhaust elbow. The elbow is included as part of the closed cooling system allowing higher

What You Need to Know About the Crusader 3-Inch Exhaust Elbow
This Crusader exhaust elbow is specific to the Crusader engine. It fits the Crusader exhaust manifold design and no others. The 3-inch refers to the exhaust hose size that connects to the elbow. It’s a typical marine water jacketed cast iron item and is painted in the classic Crusader blue.
This is not a current production part. It was used by Crusader in the 1960s up until 1992. At that point, its use in everyday production was discontinued

What You Need to Know About the Crusader Big Block Exhaust Manifold
This Big Block GM center rise exhaust manifold is the original equipment used by Crusader. They began using this manifold in 1992 on the GM 454/7.4L and 502/8.2L engines. Beginning in 2001, it was used with the 496/8.1L GM engine through the end of production in 2012. It had a 20-year run of production when there were a lot of these engines built and is still available for service replacement.
It’s a water-jacket manifold cooled

What You Need to Know About the Crusader Exhaust Elbow
The Crusader 4-inch center rise exhaust elbow is a water-cooled exhaust elbow Crusader used on all their V8 engines beginning in 1992.
There's a lifespan of this product. These elbows and the exhaust manifolds are made out of cast iron which is water-cooled and water-jacketed. Cast iron exhaust will only last 4-6 years in a saltwater environment depending on its use and how it's maintained. If the boat owner flushes the engine with

What You Need to Know About the Crusader 4-Inch Exhaust Riser
The Crusader exhaust riser is used to get the exhaust higher in the hull of the boat to allow the downhill run of the exhaust cooling water.
The water that cools the engine is injected into the exhaust system. You need that exhaust height high enough to run downhill and out of the boat. With some bigger boats, the engines are pretty low in the hull and could be at or below the water line.
By putting a riser between the manifold
