Our goal is to educate you about the purpose and function of many of the marine parts required to keep your boat running smoothly. Whether you're a veteran seaman or a novice, one thing you all know is that a boat comes equipped with hundreds of moving parts.

No one person can know everything there is to know about the proper functioning of every boat part. That's why we've tapped the collective wisdom of our long-time technical experts to share their knowledge and expertise.

What You Need to Know About the ZF Marine Spin-on Transmission Oil Filter

This ZF Marine transmission oil filter is a spin on canister element. It’s like an oil filter on your car. You spin it off its mounting and spin a new one in place. It’s for filtering the oil. All the ZF transmissions which use this particular filter use an engine oil. It’s very much like a car oil pan and oil filter change cycle.

You want to change the transmission oil and filter on an annual basis or every 500 hours of operation, whichever comes first. There are some aftermarkets filters available, but we don’t recommend an aftermarket when servicing an expensive piece of equipment like a ZF transmission. When you’re talking about a transmission that can cost anywhere from a few thousand to tens of thousands of dollars, why take a chance on a $10 filter from the auto parts store?

This ZF spin-on filter fits a wide range of their transmission products which accounts for its popularity. It's typically used on transmissions in diesel applications in the 200 to 1200 horsepower range.
